Help

Create a passport, identity, visa or driving-licence photo with your phone. Ask someone else to take the picture; webcams do not provide sufficient image quality. This guide helps you prepare for a smooth capture.

How it works

  1. Choose your document. Use the category and country filters to find the right format. If it is not listed, select the custom format.
  2. Review the requirements. Check the image dimensions, background colour and face size shown beside your selection.
  3. Start secure capture. Allow camera access and follow the instructions for your position, expression and lighting.
  4. Check your result. Retake the photo if prompted or if you are not happy with it.
  5. Choose delivery. Download the finished digital photo or, for Swiss addresses, order professional prints by post.

Before you take the photo

  • Clean the camera lens and use a stable internet connection.
  • Ask another person to take the photo where possible. Keep the camera at eye level and around an arm's length away.
  • Face a window or another soft light source. Avoid direct sunlight and strong shadows.
  • Keep your head upright, your shoulders level and your face fully visible.
  • Use a neutral or naturally friendly expression with both eyes open and your mouth closed.
  • Remove tinted glasses, hats and accessories unless an official exception applies.
  • Stand in front of a plain background that contrasts with your hair and clothing.

If the camera does not open

  • Check that your browser has permission to use the camera.
  • Close other apps that may already be using the camera.
  • Reload the page and start the capture again.
  • On a work or school device, camera access may be restricted by an administrator.

Choosing the right format

Document-photo requirements can change and the issuing authority makes the final acceptance decision. If you are uncertain, compare the selected format with the current instructions from the authority handling your application.
